2012 News

2012 Carolina Fall Classic

October 2012 – Shawn had just one more futurity horse to test drive before the NRHA Futurity in November. So he and Smart Smoking Chic, owned by Bevilacqua Soc. Agr. ARL, made the trip to Williamston, NC. Although this was only the second time Shawn had the opportunity to show this horse, he was very pleased with his performance. They marked a 149.5 to claim the Carolina Fall Classic futurity championship.

2012 Congress

Yankee Gun

October 2012 – Shawn slid his way to his 12th Congress Open Futurity championship this year aboard Arcese Quarter Horses USA’s Yankee Gun. They posted a big score of 232.5 for the win, which was six and a half points ahead of the second place horse. Shawn also placed third aboard Bob Santagata’s Spooks Sugar Rose with a 225.5.

Quistador & Star Spangled Whiz

It doesn’t get much better than winning a class at the Congress, but when you tie yourself for the win is it twice as sweet? As draw #1, Shawn rode Quistador to a big score of 230 in the Congress $3000 Open. He came back as draw #50 aboard Star Spangled Whiz and also posted a 230. Because both of these horses have to show in the next few weeks, the decision was made to be co-champions. But many in the crowd were hoping for Shawn to have to run off against himself!

Gallo Del Rojo

Shawn wasn’t the only one winning at the Congress this year, his help did pretty well too. Vincienzo Santos, a long time Flarida assistant earned his first Congress championship aboard Gallo Del Rojo in the Limited Open class. They posted a 221.5 to claim the win and the covet Congress Champion jacket.

Rick Clark continued his winning ways aboard Nestle Swhiz Chocolat. They were the Level 3 Non Pro Futurity reserve champions. John Balko and Tinselena Spark also made the Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro finals.

Sammy Flarida & Wittle Man Whizard

Of course the most anticipated moment of the Congress was young Sammy Flarida showing in the NYATT team tournament for the OQHA team. This was the first time that Sam did a complete NRHA pattern instead of the modified Short Stirrup patterns. “Of course it was the most complicated pattern we have,” Shawn added with a laugh. “but Sam worked very hard and it definitely paid off.” Sammy and Wittle marked a 208 and placed fifth in the NYATT reining class among riders 18 & Under. At age 9, he certainly held his own! Click here to watch Sammy’s video.

The Tradition

September 10, 2012 – Shawn showed Star Spangled Whiz for the first time and he couldn’t have been happier with the results. “He has been shown quite a bit in the past and I wasn’t sure how he was going to be in the pen. Well, he told me he was a show horse today!” They marked a 150 to earn the win in the Level 4 Open Tradition Maturity. Shawn will be showing Star Spangled Whiz next month at the Congress and then again at the AQHA World Show.

Ariat Tulsa Classic

Shiners Chic

August 29, 2012 – While Shawn was at the Tulsa Classic showing several three year olds, he received a call from long time client Rosanne Sternberg. Due to all of his success with Shine Chic Shine, Sternberg thought Shawn would get along well with the full brother, Shiners Chic, that she owned. With only a ride or two under his belt on Shiners Chic, Shawn felt confident in his new show ring partner. They paired up to mark a 223.5 and win the USEF National Championship, FEI CRI-3 and USEF Open Qualifier.

2012 Darling 888 Ranch Futurity

July 28, 2012- The Darling 888 Ranch Futurity, held in conjunction with the Clayton Woosley Hall of Fame Reining, is a great place to start showing my three year olds. I took two to show and Spooks Sugar Rose really stepped to the front of the class. She was bred and raised by Charlie Vaughn and recently purchased by Bob Santagata.

2012 NRHA Derby

June 30, 2012 – Although the Oklahoma City heat was oppressive, there were plenty of smiles on Saturday night. Shawn rode to his sixth NRHA Derby Open Level 4 championship aboard Spooks Gotta Whiz, owned by Michell Anne Kimball, with a score of 226. The fancy bay stallion added the third jewel of the unofficial “NRHA triple crown” with his derby championship. Just a month earlier, Shawn and “Baby Spooks” captured the NRBC championship with a big score of 236. The very talented athelete had also won the 2010 NRHA Open Futurity championship. “I love this horse,” Shawn said at the back gate. “All the really good ones have a tremendous mind. A lot of these horses have the athletic talent, but not all of them have the brain. And he’s got the brain!”

Gaynia Revenberg’s Quistador placed fifth with a score of 223.5. “this horse is always right there for me,” Shawn said after his run. “He has been a finalist in every major event since he was a three year old and he continues to come to the party for me everytime.”

Last minute instructions from Dad

2012 NRBC

Spooks Gotta Whiz

April 21, 2012 – Shawn rode to his fourth NRBC Open championship aboard Michell Ann Kimball’s Spooks Gotta Whiz with a huge score of 236. The dual registered stallion arrived in Springfield in January and Shawn connected with him immediately. The NRBC was their first event together and it was certainly successful! Together they earned $75,000, a trophy saddle, four horse trailer, belt buckle and slew of other prizes. Click here to watch their winning finals run.

Shawn qualifed all three of his entries for the finals and placed fifth aboard the 2011 NRBC Open champion, Shine Chic Shine, owned by Amabile & Strusiner. The stunning palomino stallion marked an impressive 229.5, but he had a bit of a handicap to deal with. Some where between the first stop/back up and the spins, Shine lost a slide plate but gave every effort when asked to perform three more stops. What an incredible amount of heart this great horse has shown. They collected a paycheck of $29,000 for their efforts.

Quistador was the first to work on Saturday night and he posted a score of 226 due to a bobble in the right circles. Despite the penalty, this powerful stallion earned a paycheck of $20,000. Shawn and his crew of great show horses left Katy, TX with winnings of $124,000!!

Word is that Sammy asked his Grandfather, Bill, to hand him his hat before he went through the gate, just like Bill does for Shawn. Congratulations Sammy and we’re sure this is just the first of many wins in your future!
